Seasoned politician Ken Nsonda who joined Malawi Congress Party has backed the party for maintaining the position of eligibility of members to contest during August convention.
Nsonda who was present during the Press conference at MCP headquarters in Lilongwe when Steering Committee for 2024 MCP Indaba updated the nation on some developments.
In his speech, Chairperson for the Steering committee Kezzie Msukwa said all members who are eligible to contest during party convention in August this year can collect nomination papers from 1st July, 2024.
He indicated that the committee has not received any changes on eligibility as earlier announced by party National Executive Committee (NEC) including of that anyone whose membership is less than two years is not eligible to contest.
Commenting on this, Nsonda commended Malawi Congress Party for maintaining its resolution despite the fact that he is less than a year in the party.
“I came as one way to support the resolution made before of two year membership period for one to contest during party convention even though I am new in the party,” said Nsonda.
He said there are some positions that cannot be just opened up to anyone just like what other people were thinking.
“There is no way that a person can come from nowhere and contest for a sensitive position like of President, Secretary General or Treasurer General,” added Nsonda.
He also described MCP as well organized party and does not belong to anybody but people because of such indaba updates saying other parties are silent on their conventions.
“I also like the way MCP runs its affairs that it differentiate party and government activities saying previously, other parties were conducting party meetings at State Houses.
Malawi will go for tripartite elections in September next year where people will elect through voting President, Members of Parliament and Ward Councilors’.
In preparation for the general election, political parties are expected to conduct their conventions this year.
