The main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) says it will hold its 2024 elective convention in August 2024.
According to the party’s press statement, signed by Party Spokesperson Shadric Namalomba, the Indaba is expected to take place on the 17th and 18th of August 2024 in Blantyre.
In October last year, the court ordered the party to hold an elective national conference within 90 days following leadership wrangles which resulted in the expulsion and suspension of some members.
The statement indicated that the party will take advantage of the elective convention to bring together members of the DPP and rebuild its future.
“We believe that the Elective Convention will shape the party’s direction as new leadership will be ushered in, including the party’s presidential candidate for the upcoming election”, reads part of the statement.
The convention is expecting to bring together delegates from all regions of Malawi, representing the voices and opinions of its members.
During the Indaba, members will have the opportunity to elect leaders who will sell the party to Malawians through its manifestos to win the 2025 general elections.
Previously, the DPP set the dates for the convention as the 26th and 27th of December 2023. However, the High Court’s Civil Division extended the period pending a further order from the court.
On Saturday, the ruling Malawi Congress Party announced the commencement of the collection of nomination forms, which started on July 1, 2024.
This means that the DPP and MCP will hold their conventions in August this year.
Other political parties are yet to confirm the dates to hold their elective conferences.
