ABIDA MIA TO CONTEST FOR MCP SECOND VICE PRESIDENT IN AUGUST CONVENTION

Member of Parliament for Chikwawa Nkombezi, Abida Mia, has announced her intention to contest for the position of Second Vice President at the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) convention in August 2024.

Mia, who is also the Minister of Water and Sanitation, shared that many people from both within and outside the country have encouraged her to run for the position.

“I have been approached and encouraged by many people from within and outside the country to contest during this party indaba, which will take place next month,” said Mia. She expressed that the support she receives from the public gives her the energy to accept the challenge.

Mia’s candidacy is expected to enhance women’s participation in politics, especially as the country prepares for the tripartite elections next year.

Some party members who asked for anonymity have welcomed her decision, stating that it will bring healthy competition during the convention. They believe that having candidates face competition ensures that they are elected by delegates rather than running unopposed.

Political expert George Phiri recently advised political parties to embrace democracy during their conventions, urging them to avoid endorsing candidates as it undermines democratic principles.

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has announced that it will hold its convention from August 8th to 10th, 2024, in Lilongwe, while the Democratic Progressive Party will hold its indaba on August 17th and 18th, 2024, in Blantyre.
