The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) in the Diocese of Zomba has donated 20 sewing machines worth K2.5 million to persons with albinism after they completed training in tailoring.
Augustine Mailosi, CCJP Programmes Officer for Zomba Diocese, emphasized that persons with albinism have the potential to become self-reliant if supported in engaging in income-generating activities for sustainable livelihoods.
Mailosi made these remarks at Traditional Authority Mwambo in Zomba during a ceremony where CCJP awarded 20 persons with albinism sewing machines valued at K2.5 million. This initiative is part of a project called “Enhancing Socio-economic Rights of Persons with Albinism,” funded by the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF).
“Let me appeal to you to focus on your business and take good care of the sewing machines,” Mailosi urged the recipients.
Sharon Chiromo Kumwembe, Assistant Youth Officer for Zomba District Council, expressed gratitude to CCJP for providing tailoring skills and sewing machines to persons with albinism. She encouraged them to be confident in business and contribute to the national economy and the national development aspirations of the 2063 agenda.
One of the recipients, Enelesi Anusa, praised CCJP for the training and the sewing machines. She pledged to utilize her new tailoring skills and maintain the sewing machines for sustainable livelihood.
