Traditional Authority (TA) Nkula of Machinga has called for urgent food and shelter assistance for the elderly in his area who have been severely impacted by Tropical Cyclone Freddy. He expressed concern over the difficulties faced by elderly residents in Group Village Head Kalanje, who are struggling to secure basic necessities such as food, shelter, clothing, bedding, soap, body lotion, and household utensils after the cyclone’s heavy rains destroyed their homes and belongings.
TA Nkula has appealed to organizations and individuals of goodwill to provide relief items to support the affected elderly population. He noted that it would be easy to coordinate assistance efforts, as the elderly in the area are organized through a forum known as the Kalanje Elderly Group, based in Group Village Head Kalanje, TA Nkula.
Sister Patricia Mauya, Coordinator of the Catholic Development Commission (CADECOM) in the Zomba Diocese, echoed TA Nkula’s concerns, expressing shock at the plight of the elderly. She emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian assistance to address the critical situation.
Chisiyano Adam, a member of the Kalanje Elderly Group, highlighted the dire need for aid, noting that the elderly have been in desperate need of food, shelter, bedding, and clothing since the cyclone destroyed their homes. He urged the government and individuals of goodwill to mobilize humanitarian assistance to support the elderly in their time of need.
