President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has awarded cheques totaling MK 450 million to five public universities and Mpatsa Primary School in Nsanje, aiming to support needy students and fund the reconstruction of the school. The funds were raised through the annual Golf Tournament under the Presidential Charity Initiative.
Presenting the cheques at Kamuzu Palace on Tuesday, President Chakwera emphasized that the Presidential Charity Golf Tournament’s primary objective is to foster national unity and improve the lives of those in need. He highlighted that this initiative aligns with Enabler Number Five of the Human Capital Development pillar of the Malawi 2063 Vision, stressing the importance of investing in education for the country’s future.
“Investing in education for young people is investing in the future of Malawi,” Chakwera stated, underscoring the initiative’s role in contributing to national development goals.
The five universities received a total of MK 225 million, with each institution receiving MK 37.5 million. Additionally, MPatsa Primary School has been allocated MK 225 million for the reconstruction of two classroom blocks and an administration block.
Chairperson of the Presidential Charity Initiative Committee, Vizenge Kumwenda, revealed that the 2023 golf tournament raised MK 421 million, a significant increase from the previous year’s MK 281 million. Kumwenda praised President Chakwera for his dedication to aiding the less privileged and recognized the President’s compassion and commitment to social upliftment.
