President Lazarus Chakwera departed for Maputo, Mozambique, on Wednesday for a two-day official visit aimed at bolstering bilateral relations between Malawi and Mozambique. The visit, which comes at the invitation of Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, underscores the commitment of both nations to enhance cooperation on mutual interests.

In his remarks at Kamuzu International Airport, President Chakwera highlighted the significance of the visit. “Strengthening our bilateral relations with Mozambique is critical for enhancing development between our two countries,” he said.

The discussions between the two leaders are expected to cover a range of issues that affect both nations, reflecting a shared goal of deepening cooperation.

The visit to Mozambique aligns with a broader regional context, as President Chakwera will also attend the 44th Ordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Heads of States and Government in Harare, Zimbabwe, on August 17, 2024. The Southern Africa Development Community summit will further illustrate the interconnectedness of the region and the importance of maintaining strong relationships with neighboring countries.

According to an official statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the visit will also see the signing of agreements between the Malawian and Mozambican governments, aimed at enhancing cooperation across several key areas.

President Chakwera’s itinerary reflects a strategic approach to regional diplomacy, emphasizing both bilateral and multilateral engagements to foster development and strengthen ties within the Southern African region.
