DPP VOWS TO RESTORE DEMOCRACY IN 2025, MUTHARIKA EYES LANDSLIDE VICTORY

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has vowed to restore democracy in Malawi following the 2025 elections.

Speaking at the official opening of the DPP convention at COMESA Hall in Blantyre, party president Prof. Peter Mutharika expressed confidence that the party would return to power in 2025. He thanked members from other political parties, including UTM, UDF, and AFORD, for attending the convention, emphasizing that Malawi needs such unity.

Mutharika highlighted the collaboration with UTM, AFORD, and UDF as a significant step towards a clear victory in the upcoming general elections. He also assured the nation that the DPP is ready to address the challenges the country has faced since 2020.

He urged the delegates to elect leaders committed to securing a landslide victory in 2025. “I don’t want people who take positions just for decoration,” Mutharika stated.

Before his speech, Mutharika led the party members in observing a minute of silence in memory of Dr. Saulos Chilima, the former Vice President of Malawi, who tragically died in a plane crash along with eight others in Chikangawa Forest, Mzimba.

The convention was attended by AFORD President Enoch Chihana, UTM Secretary General Patricia Kaliati, and other members of UDF, who were officially invited.

In his welcome remarks, Dr. George Chaponda, Chairperson for the Steering Committee of the 2024 Convention, noted that the presence of members from other political parties demonstrates the growing momentum of the DPP. He praised the party members for their contributions, which ensured the success of the convention, and emphasized the democratic values upheld by the DPP.

Chaponda asserted that the party is now more united and stronger than ever, with a clear focus on winning the 2025 elections with a landslide victory. “The party has no internal divisions and is fully united in its aim to win in 2025,” he said.

He also announced that nine positions, including the presidency, will go unopposed. Chaponda endorsed Prof. Peter Mutharika, describing him as a visionary leader with a strong commitment to community colleges, as the DPP’s candidate for the 2025 elections. He expressed the party’s confidence that Mutharika would lead them to victory.
