In a meeting aimed at advancing Malawi’s agricultural sector, His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, held discussions with Dr. Qu Dongyu, Director General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The meeting centered on Malawi’s ambitious agenda for agricultural commercialization, mechanization, and industrialization as vital steps towards achieving food security both within the country and across the region.
President Chakwera expressed his deep gratitude to the FAO for its unwavering support to Malawi, specifically highlighting the recently concluded FAO Country Programme Framework for the years 2024 to 2027.
He emphasized the significance of FAO’s role in Malawi’s agricultural development and lobbied for enhanced technical assistance to help transition the nation’s farmers from smallholder subsistence farming to climate-smart agriculture. This shift is crucial for enabling Malawi’s agriculture to withstand the recurrent threats posed by floods and droughts.
FAO Director General Qu Dongyu responded positively to President Chakwera’s appeal, expressing keen interest in strengthening the organization’s support for Malawi’s agricultural sector. Dr. Qu was particularly impressed by President Chakwera’s ATM Strategy, which focuses on boosting productivity through the mechanization and commercialization of Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining.
He described the strategy as “a clear vision for long-term transformation from a great leader that should be supported.”
Dr. Qu pledged to take action on the President’s request for support, emphasizing the importance of the ATM Strategy in ensuring that Malawi’s path towards the 2063 Vision of inclusive wealth is anchored by a series of consecutive milestones. These milestones, he suggested, should build on each other, guiding Malawi from agricultural production to industrialization and eventually to digitization.
The discussions between President Chakwera and Dr. Qu mark a significant step forward in Malawi’s journey towards agricultural modernization and food security, with the potential to create a more resilient and prosperous future for the nation and the region.
