In a significant diplomatic engagement, President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera today visited the Headquarters of the Community of Sant’Egidio in Rome, where he held discussions with its President, Professor Marko Impagliazzo. This high-level meeting is expected to strengthen ties and further the impact of Sant’Egidio’s interventions in Malawi, particularly through their flagship DREAM programme.
Sant’Egidio, a lay Catholic association established in 1968 by Andrea Riccardi, is globally recognized for its commitment to social service. Named after Saint Giles, the organization has a presence in 73 countries, with its headquarters located a few kilometers from The Vatican. The community is dedicated to aiding the underprivileged through various initiatives, including health, education, and peace-building.
In Malawi, the DREAM programme, which focuses on health interventions, particularly in combating HIV/AIDS, has made significant strides in improving the lives of many Malawians. The discussions between President Chakwera and Professor Impagliazzo are expected to explore ways to enhance these efforts and expand the reach of Sant’Egidio’s support to other vulnerable groups within the country.
This meeting comes at a crucial time, following the recent announcement by the Italian government of a substantial funding increase amounting to approximately K6 trillion. The funds are earmarked for various interventions in selected African countries, including Malawi. The potential for increased collaboration between the Malawian government and Sant’Egidio, backed by this new funding, promises to bring about transformative changes in the lives of the underprivileged in Malawi.
President Chakwera’s visit to the Sant’Egidio Headquarters underscores the importance of international partnerships in addressing the challenges faced by Malawi. As the discussions progress, there is optimism that this collaboration will lead to more robust and impactful interventions, furthering Malawi’s development goals and improving the lives of its citizens.
The outcome of this meeting will likely set the stage for enhanced cooperation between Malawi and Sant’Egidio, reinforcing the commitment of both parties to uplifting the underprivileged and fostering social progress in the country.
