Malawi’s government says it plans to rehabilitate Chileka Airport, which was constructed a long time ago.
Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jacob Hara, said the government wishes to rehabilitate the entire runway to improve service delivery. Hara was responding to a supplementary question from Member of Parliament for Mulanje Bale, Victor Musowa, who asked the Minister of Tourism about the situation that caused an Ethiopian Aircraft to land in Maputo instead of Chileka due to electrical faults.
The Minister of Tourism referred the question regarding the government’s actions to prevent such scenarios to the Minister of Public Works.
In his response, Minister Jacob Hara said it was a fifteen-minute fault in one of the cables, which was rectified quickly.
“My ministry is planning to construct a new runway and terminal at Chileka Airport to enhance service delivery,” said Hara.
However, he described the fault as a regrettable situation that affects the effectiveness of airport operations.
