President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has held bilateral talks with His Excellency Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, on the sidelines of the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). This meeting marks the continuation of discussions between the two leaders, following previous engagements in 2021 and 2023, as they seek to strengthen the relationship between Malawi and China.
During the talks, President Chakwera expressed his strong desire to ensure that the deliberations on key areas such as economic production, modernization, industrialization, and infrastructural development lead to swift and effective implementation. With bilateral ties poised for elevation to a strategic partnership, Chakwera emphasized the importance of moving from dialogue to tangible action that will benefit both nations.

As Malawi approaches the 17th anniversary of its diplomatic relationship with China, President Chakwera highlighted the potential for shared prosperity through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The BRI, an ambitious global infrastructure program spearheaded by China, promises significant economic impact, particularly when integrated with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Chakwera noted that Malawi stands to benefit greatly from enhanced connectivity and trade opportunities that these initiatives can bring.
Among the projects that President Chakwera identified as eligible for support under the Belt and Road Initiative are the improvement of the Rumphi-Nyika-Chitipa-Ilomba Road and the rehabilitation and expansion of Malawi’s railway lines. These infrastructure developments are expected to boost connectivity between Malawi and its neighboring countries, Zambia and Tanzania, further integrating the region’s economies and enhancing trade flows.
In response to President Chakwera’s proposals, President Xi Jinping pledged to ensure that the FOCAC summit will be a memorable and fruitful occasion for Malawi. Xi underscored his commitment to making the 17th anniversary of Malawi-China diplomatic ties a milestone that ushers in a new era of sustainable development and deepened cooperation between the two countries.
As both nations look forward to the future, the outcome of these bilateral talks signals a strengthened partnership that aims to deliver lasting benefits for Malawi’s development agenda, particularly in the areas of infrastructure and economic growth.
