President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China has announced a significant financial commitment of over RMB 360 billion yuan (USD $51 billion) to support Africa’s modernization over the next three years. The pledge, made during the official inaugural session of the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) on Thursday, highlights China’s ongoing partnership with African nations, including Malawi.
In his remarks at the prestigious Great Hall of the People in Beijing, President Xi outlined ten partnership actions aimed at deepening China-Africa cooperation. The initiatives, focused on mutual learning, trade prosperity, industrial chain cooperation, health, agriculture, and green development, will contribute to the broader goal of modernizing the Global South.
“To implement these actions, the Chinese government will provide RMB 360 billion yuan of financial support over the next three years,” Xi said.
This includes RMB 210 billion in credit lines, RMB 80 billion in various forms of assistance, and at least RMB 70 billion in investments by Chinese companies in Africa. Additionally, China will encourage African countries to issue panda bonds to strengthen results-oriented cooperation.

President Lazarus Chakwera, leading Malawi’s delegation to the summit, has already expressed interest in leveraging this new strategic partnership. Malawi has secured K50 billion in financing from China for the construction of a Judicial Complex in Lilongwe, with further positive outcomes anticipated from ongoing bilateral engagements with Chinese companies and officials.
In his address, President Xi emphasized that no African nation should be left behind in the joint pursuit of modernization. “As an African proverb goes, a friend is someone you share the path with. On the path to modernization, no one, and no country, should be left behind,” he said, rallying more than 2.8 billion Chinese and African citizens toward shared progress.
The FOCAC Summit, established in 2000, has become a crucial driver of development across Africa, transforming countries with tangible results. Other key figures in attendance included AU Chairperson Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat, alongside various heads of state from African nations.
Malawi’s participation in FOCAC positions the country to tap into the vast opportunities presented by China’s financial and technical support, fostering a brighter future for its people.
