WOMEN CAUCUS APPLAUDS MPANGA’S CONFIRMATION AS COMMISSIONER

The Parliamentary Women Caucus has commended members of Parliament for their overwhelming support in confirming Phalombe South MP Mary Mpanga as one of the Commissioners of the Parliamentary Service Commission.

Speaking after the confirmation, caucus Chairperson Rachael Zulu expressed her gratitude for Mpanga’s appointment, noting that MPs from both government and opposition sides had demonstrated the importance of women in leadership.

“Members of Parliament have shown that women leadership is crucial, and I appreciate their support for this cause,” Zulu said, adding that this proves women’s capabilities to lead in various positions.

However, Zulu also expressed disappointment over the rejection of Zomba Chingale MP Lonny Chijere Phiri for the same role, despite the reasons behind her rejection. “It would have been unfortunate if Phiri had been replaced by a man,” she said.

Mpanga, after her confirmation, expressed surprise at the level of bipartisan support, thanking her fellow MPs. “I have seen the love and support from my colleagues, regardless of political affiliation, and I truly thank God for this,” she said.

She urged MPs to continue supporting her in achieving the caucus’s goals during her tenure as Commissioner.

Last week, Parliament rejected Chijere Phiri’s nomination for the same position.
