EX-PRESIDENT BANDA’S UNREST WARNING SPARKS DEBATE ON VOTER REGISTRATION

Human rights activist Undule Mwakasungula has voiced his concerns over former President Dr. Joyce Banda’s recent remarks, calling on leaders to prioritize peace and avoid rhetoric that could incite unrest. Banda, leader of the People’s Party, warned of potential civil disorder if grievances surrounding voter registration remain unaddressed, sparking a lively debate within Malawi’s political and civil circles.

Speaking at a rally in Kasungu, Banda emphasized that unresolved issues with the voter registration process could lead to widespread public dissatisfaction and potentially to civil unrest. She criticized the handling of the process by the National Registration Bureau (NRB) and the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), stressing the importance of fair and accessible voter registration ahead of upcoming elections.

Mwakasungula expressed dismay at Banda’s remarks, underscoring that as a former head of state, Banda should focus on fostering unity and peace rather than predicting turmoil.

“It is unfortunate for such remarks to come from Joyce Banda, a former head of state,” he stated in an interview. “Leaders have a duty to preach peace, and they should avoid language that may incite or predict violence.”

Mwakasungula emphasized that leaders should work to maintain stability by encouraging dialogue and continued engagement between the government and the people. He added that constructive dialogue between the NRB, MEC, and the public could help to defuse tensions surrounding the registration process and address grievances without resorting to disruptive measures.

However, not everyone shared Mwakasungula’s caution. Social commentator Rhodey Salamu expressed agreement with Banda, stressing the urgency for the NRB and MEC to act swiftly. Salamu warned that delays in resolving the registration issues could indeed heighten frustrations and potentially lead to civil unrest.

“If these issues remain unresolved, public frustration will only grow, and we could see significant backlash,” he noted.

The growing concern over the voter registration process highlights mounting public pressure on the NRB and MEC. Malawians across the nation have raised concerns over the accessibility and efficiency of the registration process, pointing to systemic delays and technical issues that have prevented many from enrolling.

With elections approaching, both Banda’s warning and Mwakasungula’s response underscore the high stakes involved in ensuring a smooth and transparent registration process. As the nation watches closely, calls for dialogue and peaceful resolution continue to ring across Malawi’s political and civil spectrum, urging leaders to champion stability in uncertain times.
