Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has strongly condemned recent incidents of political violence, joining former presidents Dr. Joyce Banda, Professor Peter Mutharika, and Dr. Bakili Muluzi in denouncing the acts. The President called for swift action from the Malawi Police Service, urging them to investigate thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to justice.
In a statement, Chakwera emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and unity in Malawi, stating that political violence has no place in a democratic society. The condemnation from the current and former leaders comes amid rising tensions linked to political activities in the country.
On another pressing issue, President Chakwera announced significant steps to tackle Malawi’s ongoing fuel crisis, which has persisted for six weeks. Acknowledging the patience shown by Malawians during this difficult period, he revealed that the government is securing a $50 million facility from the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) to stabilize the situation.
Chakwera also proposed transitioning to a government-to-government procurement system for fuel to address foreign exchange shortages that have disrupted supply chains. As part of this initiative, the President will visit the United Arab Emirates next week to finalize agreements aimed at ensuring a steady supply of fuel for Malawi.
