In a bold move to ensure fiscal discipline, Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Simplex Chithyola, has presented what he calls a “sacrificial budget,” underlining the government’s commitment to living within its means. Central to this plan are revenue enhancement measures designed to strengthen economic recovery and fiscal consolidation.
One of the most striking proposals is the removal of the Value Added Tax (VAT) waiver on motor vehicle imports for privileged individuals. The policy change will affect high-ranking figures, including serving and retired Presidents, Vice Presidents, Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, senior judiciary officials such as Judges, and top government and military officials.
“This measure signifies a step towards equity and fiscal responsibility,” Chithyola stated, urging lawmakers in the August House to align with the government’s efforts to revive the economy.
Other revenue-focused initiatives include the full implementation of electronic excise tax stamps to curb tax evasion, opening a voluntary tax compliance window for motorcycle operators, and expanding electronic payment systems across revenue-collecting entities.
The Minister emphasized that these steps are critical for fostering economic stability and ensuring the government meets its financial obligations without over-reliance on external borrowing.
“The time has come for collective sacrifice,” Chithyola said, as he called for unity in achieving a stronger and more sustainable economic future for Malawi.
