MP PHIRI URGES URGENT ACTION AS RAINS WASH AWAY LINTHIPE BRIDGE

Heavy rains on Thursday washed away the Linthipe River bridge along the Lilongwe-Machinga road, sparking concerns over mobility in the area.

Zomba Chingale MP Lonnie Phiri expressed worry, noting that the washed-away bridge will disrupt transport for police, ambulances, farmers, schoolchildren, and churchgoers. She also highlighted difficulties faced by Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) vehicles transporting voter transfer materials.

Phiri called on the Ministry of Transport and Public Works and the National Roads Authority to urgently address the issue.

“I will be communicating with the relevant authorities to ensure the Linthipe bridge is fixed as soon as possible,” she said, adding that the bridge had long-standing issues needing attention.

Area Development Committee (ADC) Chairperson Redson Sumani added that other bridges in the area were also washed away, further affecting education, trade, and healthcare services. He echoed calls for swift intervention to restore mobility and livelihoods in the community.
