MTAMBO REFUSES TO BACK DPP DESPITE AFORD-ENDORSED ALLIANCE

It has emerged that Alliance for Democracy (Aford) Vice President Timothy Mtambo opposed the party’s decision to form an alliance with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

In a three-page letter dated July 22, addressed to Aford President Enock Chihana, Mtambo argued that the ideologies of the two parties are fundamentally different. He confirmed authoring the letter, stating he could not work with the same party he campaigned against in 2020, “because it has not changed.”

The letter partly reads: “The DPP was voted out of power in 2020 largely because Malawians were tired of electoral rigging, corruption, nepotism, human rights violations, and declining living standards.

As a party that encouraged Malawians to reject the DPP at that time, I find myself asking: what has changed about DPP that should make us go back to the same people and ask them to trust DPP with power again?”

Mtambo stressed it would be hypocritical to now urge Malawians to vote for the DPP without a clear explanation of what has shifted. “Without clarity to our supporters and the Malawian people, it would be insincere to advocate for trust in the same leadership that failed them before,” he wrote.

Mtambo was notably absent when Chihana announced the pact with the DPP. When questioned, Chihana claimed Mtambo was in Chitipa preparing for upcoming rallies.
