People’s Development Party (PDP) president, Kondwani Nankhumwa, has pledged to increase civil servants’ salaries by 30 percent annually if voted into power.
Speaking at the launch of the PDP manifesto at Golden Peacock Hotel in Blantyre, Nankhumwa said improving the welfare of civil servants is among his top priorities, describing them as central to national development.
He outlined several measures aimed at uplifting workers’ conditions, including the establishment of a national bus company to ease transport challenges for civil servants and provide support to boarding school students.
On governance, the PDP leader promised to introduce a lean cabinet of 20 members, including the president and vice president, and restrict the number of principal secretaries to the same figure. He further pledged to regulate foreign travel by cabinet ministers, limiting it to a maximum of three trips per year per minister.
Nankhumwa also vowed to tackle Malawi’s rising public debt, which he claimed is being contracted “through the backdoor,” saying his government would introduce a strong legal framework to ensure debt sustainability and economic recovery.
“PDP has come to rescue Malawians from failed leadership, hunger, and the continuous rise in the cost of basic commodities,” he declared.
On the campaign trail, Nankhumwa said PDP has been preparing its structures and energizing members for what he described as a “winning campaign.”
The PDP manifesto, he added, is designed to restore hope and bring meaningful change to Malawians.
