DPP WARNS SUPPORTERS AGAINST MISCONDUCT AFTER ELECTION VICTORY

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has urged its supporters to celebrate responsibly and refrain from behavior that could tarnish the party’s reputation or destabilize the nation, following its victory in the September 16 General Elections.

In a strongly worded statement issued on September 26, 2025, the party’s Secretary General, Peter Mukhito, condemned incidents of harassment against Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) journalists, insults directed at members of the judiciary, the illegal use of “ADADI” number plates, and the scramble for “migodi” (business spaces) at depots and markets.

“These behaviors are not only unacceptable but recall the same conduct that led to us being voted out of government in 2020,” Mukhito cautioned.

He reminded party faithful that President-elect Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika represents peace and national unity, and that supporters must reflect those values during celebrations.

“As we celebrate our victory, I urge everyone to do so responsibly, maintaining respect for the rule of law, our institutions, and each other. Let us demonstrate dignity and civility that will reinforce our commitment to a better Malawi,” Mukhito said.

The call for restraint comes as DPP supporters across the country continue jubilations over Mutharika’s return to power. However, the party leadership has expressed concern that unruly conduct risks overshadowing its political comeback.
