The United Transformation Movement (UTM) has appointed seasoned politician Dr. Patricia Kaliyati as its leader in Parliament. Kaliyati, a Member of Parliament for Mulanje Central, was appointed alongside other members of the parliamentary leadership team.
In a letter signed by UTM Secretary General Willet Kalonga, Kenneth Ndovie has been named as Kaliyati’s deputy, while Felix Njawala will serve as Chief Whip, with Edgar Kapalamula as his deputy.
The party president, Dalitso Kabambe, urged UTM members to fully support the newly appointed leadership and to remain focused, united, and steadfast in serving Malawians.
Kabambe expects the leadership team to work together to effectively coordinate the party’s legislative agenda, ensure disciplined representation, and advance the voice and vision of UTM in Parliament.
In a post on her Facebook page regarding her appointment, Kaliyati expressed her sincere gratitude to UTM President Dr. Dalitso Kabambe for entrusting her with the role of Leader of UTM in the House.
“It is an honor to serve and to contribute to the realization of our shared vision for Malawi. Your decision reflects not only your confidence in me but also underscores your commitment to empowering members of our movement to play meaningful roles,” she stated.
Dr. Kaliyati further promised to fulfill this role with integrity, diligence, and a strong sense of responsibility. The United Transformation Movement is the third political party in Malawi to have a significant number of Members of Parliament, following the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
