Airtel Malawi plc on Tuesday, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Dr. Ben Malunga Phiri, to discuss areas of collaboration and address operational challenges affecting the telecommunications company.
In his welcome remarks, Dr. Phiri commended the company for its continued partnership with government, particularly in advancing digital reforms and contributing to national security efforts through network infrastructure development.
The delegation, led by Airtel Malawi Managing Director Aashish Dutt, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to fulfilling its tax obligations and maintaining strong working relationships with the Ministry and other government institutions.
Dutt appealed for the Ministry’s support in establishing a structured compensation mechanism to address frequent fibre cuts caused by construction works undertaken by councils, utility companies, and other government-contracted entities.
He emphasized the need for systematic engagement with district councils to safeguard fiber infrastructure and communication towers nationwide.In response, Dr. Phiri reiterated government’s appreciation of private sector partnerships as key drivers of economic growth.
He assured Airtel Malawi of his Ministry’s support, pledging to engage relevant authorities to find a lasting solution to the challenges raised.
