Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Bright Msaka, has emphasized that the right to education remains the foundation to national development on which other rights of the children are built.
Msaka made the remarks during World Children Day Commemoration, which was held at Mpondamwala Primary School in Lilongwe Rural West on Tuesday.
The Minister said education opens doors to opportunities, innovatioms and independence hence government’s continues investment in the sector to ensure every child enjoys the right to education.
“Government of Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika is working hard to remove all the barriers to accessing the right to education. We are strengthening social protection systems to support vulnerable families, improving access to early childhood education, and increasing investment in community-based schools so that children in remote areas do not have to walk long distances to learn. We are making education a right for every Malawian child, and not a privilege for a few,” Msaka stressed.
Msaka condemned public schools that demand financial contributions from learners, saying the practice forces many children to dropout along the way.
The minister said currently, government is intensifying the learning of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects to ensure children adapt to the changing world which is science driven.
Unicef country representative Penelope Campbell said it is the responsibility of every country, including Malawi, to ensure that children receive quality education in a safe and conducive environment.
