MOROCCO’S MASEN PLEDGES 500MW RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECT IN MALAWI

Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, George Chaponda, held talks with Tarik Ameziane Moufaddal, President and CEO of the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN), during a visit to the agency’s headquarters in Rabat.

During the meeting, MASEN reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Malawi’s energy transition, pledging to develop a 500-megawatt renewable energy power plant in the country by 2026. Officials say the planned project is expected to boost Malawi’s electricity generation capacity and contribute to long-term sustainable development.

As part of the next steps, a team of senior MASEN technical experts is scheduled to visit Malawi in December to begin preliminary feasibility studies in partnership with the Ministry of Energy.

Founded in 2010, MASEN leads Morocco’s large-scale solar and renewable energy programmes and has played a key role in positioning the Kingdom as one of Africa’s major renewable power producers.

The initiative aligns with the 2026–2028 Roadmap of Cooperation between Malawi and Morocco, which prioritizes clean energy development and improved access to electricity. Under the roadmap, MASEN will collaborate with Malawi’s Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining to advance green technologies and deepen bilateral cooperation.

Officials say Dr. Chaponda’s visit continues to strengthen relations between the two nations and is paving the way for new investment opportunities in Malawi’s energy sector.
