RESCUE EFFORTS CONTINUES IN KASUNGU MINE COLLAPSE, LEAVES ONE DEAD

Rescue teams in Kasungu District are still searching for ten people who remain trapped after a mine collapsed in Chimbiya Village, under Traditional Authority (T/A) Chitanthamapiri.

The accident has thrown the community into distress as families await updates on the missing miners.

Local authorities say the miners have not yet been located, and the chances of finding survivors remain uncertain.

The collapse occurred earlier this week, prompting an urgent response from district and national disaster officials.

Shepherd Jere, the district’s Disaster Risk Management Officer, confirmed that the death toll currently stands at one.

He added that two other miners who suffered severe injuries were rushed to Kasungu District Hospital, where they are receiving medical treatment.

Their condition has not yet been disclosed.

Rescue operations are being carried out by a coordinated team involving officers from the District Council, the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), the Malawi Police Service, and traditional leaders led by Chief Chitanthamapiri.

The team has been working around the clock, despite the difficult in terrain and the unstable structure of the collapsed mine.

Authorities say their immediate priority is to locate the remaining trapped miners while ensuring the safety of rescue personnel.

Heavy machinery and manual excavation are being used carefully to avoid further collapse.

Community members have gathered near the site, hoping for positive news as rescue workers continue their efforts.

Officials have urged the public to remain patient and allow emergency teams to conduct their operations effectively.

The cause of the collapse has not yet been established, but investigations are expected to follow once the rescue mission is complete.
