President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has urged newly commissioned officers of the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) to embrace discipline, integrity, and professionalism as they step into their roles within the country’s security system.
Speaking on Friday at the Malawi Armed Forces College (MAFCO) in Salima, Mutharika presided over the commissioning ceremony of 122 Officer Cadets who have completed their military training.
The President commended the new officers for successfully undergoing 18 months of intensive training, describing their commitment as a significant contribution to Malawi’s peace and security architecture.
Mutharika said the strength of any military institution lies in the calibre of its officers, particularly those who honor their oath and understand the dynamic security threats facing the nation and the broader region.
He cited challenges such as cross-border terrorism, human trafficking, and regional instability, warning that these threats continue to evolve and require resilient, well-trained officers.
The President encouraged the officers to continuously upgrade their skills through further training and professional development, saying the rapidly changing global landscape demands adaptable and knowledgeable military personnel.
He stressed that the public places immense trust in military officers, a trust that must be safeguarded with accountability, humility, and a commitment to national service.
Mutharika also highlighted the importance of maintaining a non-partisan military, cautioning officers against engaging in political activities that could compromise the values and integrity of the MDF.
Chief of Defence Force General George Alexander Jaffu echoed the President’s message, emphasizing that discipline remains the bedrock of the military. The newly commissioned cohort comprises 96 men, 26 women, and 10 cadets from allied countries.
