A delegation from Gambia, which was in Nsanje on Thursday to learn and appreciate how the district is managing the use of the Harmonised Grievance Redress Mechanism (HGRM), has expressed satisfaction with how the system is being handled.
Fatoumata Samateh, a Social Safeguard Officer in the Gambian Vice President’s Office, said the delegation has learnt how they will apply the same approach in their country as they are building a similar system.
“The system they are using to log grievances is very effective, and even people in the villages, including women, people living with disabilities and local chiefs can use it,” she said.
Principal Economist in the Department of Economic Planning and Development under the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralisation, Allan Jere, said they are pleased that other countries are impressed with the HGRM system and are coming to learn from Malawi.
“This recognition will greatly assist us. We have also learnt a lot which we will capitalise on in addressing the grievances that we receive from citizens regarding our social protection issues,” Jere said.
The HGRM is used to gather grievances from citizens who are on social cash transfer programmes and other social welfare initiatives implemented by the government, so that the concerns can be acted upon with proper solutions.
