POWER BLACKOUTS WILL SOON BE HISTORY — MATHANGA

Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining, Dr. Jean Mathanga, says Malawi is steadily moving toward a future free from persistent electricity blackouts, thanks to ongoing works on the 400 kV Malawi–Mozambique power interconnection project.

Speaking on Sunday during a visit to Phombeya in Balaka District—where major components of the project are being implemented—Dr. Mathanga said the progress made so far gives strong hope that the country’s power challenges will soon be a thing of the past. The minister toured the site to monitor construction and motivate the technical teams on the ground.

Dr. Mathanga disclosed that about 90 percent of the construction work has been completed, describing the achievement as evidence of commitment from both government and engineers involved in the project.

She explained that the interconnection line is expected to be fully operational by February next year, a milestone she said will play a key role in stabilizing the country’s electricity supply.

Once commissioned, the system will enable Malawi to tap additional power from Mozambique, a development Dr. Mathanga said will significantly reduce power fluctuations and unplanned outages.

The minister added that her ministry is pursuing a range of strategies aimed at increasing domestic electricity generation to meet the needs of both households and industry. These initiatives, she said, form part of long-term efforts to strengthen Malawi’s energy security.

She reiterated government’s commitment to supporting energy projects that offer lasting solutions, stressing that reliable electricity is critical for national development and improved livelihoods.

Concluding her remarks, Dr. Mathanga assured Malawians that the visible progress at Phombeya reflects real transformation in the sector, expressing confidence that the country is firmly on course to ending chronic power blackouts.
