The confirmation of a cholera case in Balaka District has prompted health authorities to strengthen preventive measures aimed at controlling the spread of the disease.
District Health Promotion Officer Mercy Nyirenda, who also speaks for the District Health Office, said swift action was taken immediately after the case was confirmed.
She explained that health workers carried out intensive contact tracing and enhanced disease surveillance within the affected area.
Nyirenda added that, so far, no suspected or secondary cholera cases have been identified in the district.
Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure early detection of any new cases.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of the Health Thematic Group under the Balaka Civil Society Network, Clement Chiwala, has called for coordinated efforts among stakeholders.
Chiwala emphasized the need for increased resources to promote and implement effective Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) activities.
Balaka District has, in recent years, been identified as one of the cholera hotspots in Malawi, making prevention efforts critical.
