GOVERNMENT TO RESUME MAIZE PURCHASE ON DECEMBER 31, 2025

The Government of Malawi, through the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA), has announced plans to resume the purchase of maize across the country on December 31, 2025. According to a statement released by NFRA, the agency will buy maize at a price of K1,100 per kilogram, which translates to K55,000 per 50 kg bag.

The purchase will be conducted at all designated NFRA depots nationwide, and the market is open to all individuals, farmers, and traders. NFRA emphasizes that purchases will be done on a first-come, first-served basis, ensuring transparency and fairness in the process.

NFRA has set a minimum quantity for sale at 20 bags of 50 kg each, equivalent to 1 metric tonne. Additionally, all maize presented for sale must meet NFRA’s quality standards, ensuring that only good-quality produce is accepted.

This move is expected to benefit farmers who have been waiting for the government to announce the purchase price and resume buying maize. The price of K1,100 per kilogram is seen as a fair deal for farmers, considering the current market prices.

The resumption of maize purchase is also expected to inject liquidity into the rural economy, as farmers will have an opportunity to sell their produce and earn some income. NFRA’s decision to open the market to all individuals, farmers, and traders is also expected to promote competition and fair prices in the agricultural sector.
