REGISTRAR GENERAL’S OFFICE PREPARES FOR PARASTATAL TRANSITION AMID REFORMS

Registrar General, Counsel Chikumbutso Namelo, has revealed that his office is implementing reforms as part of preparations to transition into a parastatal, a move intended to enhance efficiency and service delivery.

Namelo made the remarks when he briefed the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Honourable Charles Mhango, during the Minister’s visit to the Registrar General’s office in Blantyre yesterday.

He disclosed that the office collected K10 billion in revenue last year, mainly from business registrations, surpassing its targets and making a significant contribution to the national budget.

Despite the positive performance, Namelo noted that staff remuneration remains a major challenge, citing the demanding nature of the work, which often requires employees to remain in the office for extended periods.

Solicitor General and Secretary for Justice, Honourable Gertrude Lynn Hiwa, SC, who accompanied the Minister, commended the Registrar General and his staff for their dedication.

She emphasized that the success of the office is anchored in the commitment of its workforce and urged the Registrar General to establish favourable conditions of service to motivate staff as the institution transitions to parastatal status.

The Minister commended the office for its achievements, particularly in archiving and digitalisation efforts.

“I encourage you to keep pace with regional and international standards in order to remain competitive,” said Mhango.

He also conveyed greetings from President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika and underscored the importance of integrity, hard work, patriotism, and fairness in public service.

The Minister urged senior staff to mentor new employees, called for continuous training to boost productivity, and reaffirmed government’s commitment to treating all employees professionally and impartially.

The Minister is today scheduled to visit the Directorate of Public Prosecutions offices in Blantyre and other institutions.
