The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) has appealed for an additional K4 billion to assist communities affected by natural disasters in Nkhotakota District during the 2025/26 rainy season.
Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs, Wilson Moleni, said the funding is critical to enable the department to adequately respond to emergencies and provide relief to affected households.
Moleni disclosed that DoDMA has so far mobilised K4.6 billion out of the K8.6 billion required under the Emergency Response Plan for the current rainy season.
He noted that the existing resources are insufficient to meet the growing needs on the ground, particularly in districts experiencing repeated climate-related shocks.
Moleni has therefore called on the international donor community, United Nations agencies, foreign missions, non-governmental organisations and other well-wishers to help bridge the funding gap.
He said additional support would strengthen disaster preparedness, response and recovery efforts in vulnerable communities.
Meanwhile, DoDMA reported that since the onset of the 2025/26 rainy season, 36,283 households across 29 councils nationwide have been affected by stormy rains, strong winds, flash floods and lightning strikes.
According to the department, the disasters have so far claimed 40 lives and left 209 people injured.
