By Synd Kalimbuka

One of the candidates contesting in the Chirunga Ward councillor by-election in Zomba, Chisomo Leman, has pledged to bring meaningful development to the area if elected.

Speaking during the campaign, Leman, who is standing as an independent candidate, said he is determined to address the long-standing challenges facing people in the ward.

He described it as unfortunate that some past leaders who have served the area failed to listen to the concerns and needs of the local residents.

Among his key priorities, Leman said he wants to empower community members through business initiatives that focus on vocational and handcraft skills.

He added that promoting small-scale trade and self-employment would help improve livelihoods and reduce poverty among youths and women.

Currently, six candidates are competing in the Chirunga Ward by-election, making the race highly competitive.
The contestants include Chris Tchaka of UTM, Chikhulupiliro Jimu of the DPP, and independent candidates Benson Bulla, a former Mayor of Zomba City, and Chingani Mwangalika.

The Chirunga Ward by-election, under Zomba City North Constituency, is being held following the death of the former councillor, Abraham Nyondo.
