Speaker of Parliament, Sameer Suleman, has called on Members of Parliament to discharge their duties with professionalism, diligence and non-partisanship in order to safeguard public resources.
Suleman made the remarks during the opening of an induction workshop for the Budget and Finance Committee, the Public Accounts Committee, and the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Corporations and State Enterprises at the Parliament Building in Lilongwe.
He described the three committees as custodians of public accountability and the eyes of Malawians in the management and use of public funds.
“Effective parliamentary oversight requires technical capacity, independence of thought and close collaboration with accountability institutions,” said the Speaker.
Suleman added that the success of parliamentary committees should be measured by the impact of their recommendations rather than the number of reports they produce.
He thanked the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Malawi for its continued support to Parliament, describing the workshop as a deliberate investment in strengthening the credibility and effectiveness of parliamentary oversight.
Suleman further assured UNDP that Parliament remains committed to its oversight role in the management of public finances and to working closely with partners to promote accountability.
UNDP Governance Portfolio Manager Nanise Saune-Qaloewai said the workshop focuses on oversight across the full budget cycle, including public debt, fiscal risks, domestic resource mobilisation and state-owned enterprises, as part of preparations for the 2026–2027 fiscal year budget.
