MRA TO BEGIN DATA COLLECTION FOR RENTAL INCOME TAX

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) says it will soon deploy a team to begin collecting data on all residential houses across the country before enforcing rental income tax measures.

The exercise is aimed at identifying property owners and gathering relevant information that will support the implementation of the rental income tax.

MRA Head of Corporate Affairs, Wilma Chalulu, made the remarks on Monday in Mzuzu during a media training session focusing on Rental Income and Electronic Invoice Systems.

Chalulu explained that the initiative is part of the authority’s broader strategy to strengthen tax compliance and enhance domestic revenue collection.

She further highlighted that Section 11 of the Taxation Act clearly states that all income derived in Malawi is taxable.

According to Chalulu, this includes rental earnings from residential and commercial properties, which property owners are required to declare.
Meanwhile, one of the journalists who attended the training, Pledge Jali of Nation Publications Limited, described the session as both timely and effective.

Jali noted that members of the public are keen to understand how the MRA plans to implement the new tax collection system and ensure that the process is fair and transparent.
