The board of directors at Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) has dismissed the institution’s Director General, George Kasakula, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure at the public broadcaster.
Kasakula confirmed the development in an interview this afternoon, stating that he received an official dismissal letter from the board informing him of the decision.
“It is true, the board has summarily dismissed me. They are saying I was partisan,” Kasakula said, acknowledging the allegations cited in his termination.
The dismissal follows his appearance before the board’s Human Resource and Administration Committee last week, where he was reportedly asked to respond to concerns raised about his conduct.
Kasakula was appointed Director General of MBC in 2021, taking over leadership of the national broadcaster at a time when the institution was undergoing operational and administrative reforms.
In June 2024, he signed a new contract that was set to run until June 2027, signaling what had appeared to be continued confidence in his leadership.
However, in October last year, he was suspended from his position pending investigations into allegations that have not been fully disclosed to the public.
His dismissal now marks a significant leadership change at MBC, with the board expected to announce interim management arrangements as the broadcaster navigates the transition.
