ZOMBA DISTRICT COUNCIL LAUNCHES 2025–2026 FORESTRY SEASON

Zomba District Council has officially launched the 2025–2026 forestry season with a strong appeal for collective action in tree planting.

The launch was held under the theme “Trees and Forest Community Resilience,” emphasizing the critical role forests play in strengthening communities against environmental challenges and climate change.

Speaking as guest of honour, District Council Chairperson Baster Chirwa expressed concern over the continued destruction of forests across the district. He noted that the rampant cutting down of trees is undermining environmental sustainability and threatening livelihoods that depend on natural resources.

Chirwa lamented that many people are failing to take full responsibility for environmental protection. He singled out charcoal production and unsustainable farming practices as major contributors to deforestation, warning that such activities are accelerating land degradation and loss of biodiversity.

He stressed that restoring forest cover requires a shared commitment from all stakeholders, including local leaders, civil society organizations, and ordinary citizens. According to the chairperson, planting trees should not be viewed as a seasonal activity but as an ongoing responsibility.

Chairperson for the Environment and Climate Change Thematic Group under the Zomba CSO Network, Richard Malili, echoed the concerns raised during the event.

He observed that environmental degradation has reached alarming levels due to destructive practices that continue to deplete natural forests.

Malili emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration during the tree-planting season. He called for coordinated efforts among community members, organizations, and government structures to ensure that planted trees survive and contribute meaningfully to environmental restoration.

Senior Chief Mwambo also addressed the gathering, urging communities to take a leading role in conserving their natural surroundings. He encouraged people to demonstrate ownership and responsibility by actively participating in tree planting initiatives.

The launch concluded with renewed commitments from various stakeholders to intensify afforestation efforts. Leaders expressed hope that through collective action and sustained commitment, the district can reclaim its lost forest cover and build resilient communities for future generations.
