ADL TRACKING IDLE AERODROMES FOR RENOVATION
By Synd Kalimbuka
Airport Development Limited (ADL) says it is currently tracking and assessing all aerodromes across the country for renovation and the revival of those that have been idle for years.
Monkey Bay Aerodrome is one of the idle aerodromes where aircraft have not landed for nearly four years, and the site has reportedly become a hotspot for sexual activities.
ADL Board Chairperson Stain Singo, however, said reclaiming some aerodromes will be difficult due to encroachment by individuals who have built houses on the sites. He blamed local councils for selling the land.
Meanwhile, social commentator Linda Kunthembwe has commended the development, saying it will boost the country’s transport systems.
This publication understands that the Malawi National Transport Master Plan (2017–2037) stipulates that the government should hand over unused airfields to local authorities and the private sector.
