Social activist Agape Khombe has praised the political approach demonstrated by Peter Mukhito, describing it as a rare example of leadership that prioritizes service to people beyond electoral outcomes.
Khombe’s remarks follow Mukhito’s recent visit to Kauma Township in Lilongwe, where he was seen distributing relief items to vulnerable residents despite having previously lost the parliamentary seat for the area.
Mukhito contested for the Lilongwe City Centre Constituency during the last elections but was defeated by Gift Nankhuni. However, Khombe says the former candidate’s continued engagement with the community demonstrates a political culture that many leaders should emulate.
According to Khombe, Malawi’s political landscape has traditionally seen many candidates disappear from communities soon after elections, particularly after suffering defeat. In contrast, he said Mukhito’s decision to remain present and assist residents sends a powerful message about the true meaning of public leadership.
“Elections come and go, but the responsibility to serve people should not end with the results,” Khombe observed.
“What Peter Mukhito has demonstrated is that leadership is about commitment to people, not only the pursuit of political victory.”
Khombe further noted that many politicians often focus on campaign activities during election periods but disengage once the results are announced. He said the approach taken by Mukhito challenges this pattern and reflects a deeper sense of responsibility toward constituents.
The activist added that Mukhito’s actions in Kauma show that political leaders can still support communities even when they are not elected to office. He said such gestures help rebuild trust between citizens and political leaders.
Khombe also described Mukhito’s actions as a reflection of values rooted in compassion and humility, adding that political leadership should be guided by service and empathy rather than resentment after electoral defeat.
He said the example set by the politician from the Democratic Progressive Party offers an important lesson to aspiring leaders, particularly those preparing for future elections.
“As the country moves toward future electoral cycles, politicians must understand that communities expect consistent engagement. Leadership should be about love for the people and commitment to their welfare,” Khombe said.
Khombe concluded that the spirit demonstrated by Mukhito should inspire both winners and losers in elections to continue working for the benefit of communities, emphasizing that true leadership is measured not only by political success but by service to the people.
