Parliament has passed the 2026/27 National Budget, approving K10.978 trillion for government expenditure after weeks of thorough scrutiny and deliberations.
The approval follows the Committee of Supply stage, during which Members of Parliament examined and adopted expenditure estimates for various ministries, departments, and agencies.
The Budget prioritises key sectors critical to national development, including agriculture, health, education, infrastructure, and governance.
Major allocations include K971.3 billion to the Ministry of Agriculture, K558.07 billion to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, K316.6 billion to the Ministry of Education, and K447.1 billion to the Roads Fund Administration.
Security institutions such as the Malawi Defence Force and the Malawi Police Service have also been allocated significant resources, alongside oversight bodies including the Anti-Corruption Bureau and the National Assembly.
The approved budget is expected to support the implementation of government programmes aimed at promoting economic growth and improving service delivery.
Prior to its adoption, the House, sitting as the Committee of Supply, scrutinised and approved all 59 votes contained in the budget statement presented by Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralisation, Joseph Mwanamvekha.
The process allowed Members of Parliament to examine and endorse allocations for various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
Reporting back to the House, Mwanamvekha confirmed that the approved 59 votes total K10,978,491,310,711, forming the full estimate for the 2026/2027 Financial Year.
