MAIZE PRICES VARY SHARPLY BETWEEN MWANZA AND LIRANGWE MARKETS

Maize prices continue to show significant variation across different trading centres, with Mwanza and Lirangwe recording notably different rates.

A recent market assessment indicates that in parts of Kunenekude and most northern destinations of Mwanza, maize is being sold at prices ranging between K15,000 and K20,000 per 50kg bag.

This translates to approximately K1,500 to K2,000 for a 5-litre pail, commonly used by consumers for small-scale purchases.

In contrast, Lirangwe market is maintaining much higher prices, with a 50kg bag selling between K50,000 and K55,000.

The price differences highlight ongoing disparities in supply and accessibility across regions, raising concerns about affordability and food security for households in high-cost areas.

Market observers say the situation calls for close monitoring, as fluctuations in staple food prices continue to impact livelihoods, especially among low-income communities.
