An ICT service provider, Sparc Systems Limited, has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing technological development in Malawi following the successful launch of its state-of-the-art data centre in Lilongwe.
The unveiling took place during the fourth edition of Think Tech Thursday, where the company showcased its growing role in hosting data for various institutions.
Speaking during the event, the company’s Founder and Managing Director, Dr. Wisely Phiri, said the facility currently has the capacity to host up to 120 racks, with each rack capable of storing petabytes of data—an indication of the country’s increasing readiness to handle large-scale digital demands.
He emphasized that the infrastructure is more than sufficient to meet Malawi’s current and future data storage needs.
Dr. Phiri further revealed that Sparc Systems Limited is already extending its services beyond Malawi’s borders, exporting data solutions to at least ten countries. He noted that the company aims to create a supportive ecosystem for innovators, ensuring that local developers and businesses no longer face challenges in securely storing and managing their data.
He also questioned the continued reliance on foreign solutions, stating that locally developed technologies have already proven their effectiveness internationally. Dr. Phiri assured stakeholders that the data centre is equipped with reliable power backup systems, advanced security measures, and a team of skilled professionals to guarantee uninterrupted and secure services.
Meanwhile, Paul Kanthambi, Data Centre Manager in the Department of E-Government under the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, described the development as a significant milestone for Malawi. He said the facility will play a critical role in supporting the government’s digital transformation agenda by providing a secure platform for storing and managing essential data required for modern systems.
