President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera on Thursday symbolically switched on the power supply under the Malawi Rural Electrification Program (MAREP) 9 at Nkudzi Primary School in Chikwawa. This marks a significant milestone in the government’s ongoing effort to improve access to electricity in rural areas.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola emphasized the crucial role of energy in driving economic growth and enhancing livelihoods. “Energy is the driver of the economy and an enabler of development,” Matola said.
He highlighted that access to electricity will allow learners in the community to study at night, which will greatly improve educational outcomes. “Additionally, maize mills will be more accessible within the community, reducing the distance people need to travel for essential services,” Matola added.
Senior Chief Maseya echoed the minister’s sentiments, expressing confidence in the transformative power of electrification. “Where there is electricity, development follows. I’m confident this power supply will bring about more growth and improve the quality of life for our people,” he said.
The MAREP 9 initiative, which covers 19 sites across Chikwawa district, is part of the government’s broader strategy to extend electrification to rural areas, thereby fostering socio-economic development and reducing poverty. So far, nine of these sites have already been connected to the grid, bringing immediate benefits to the communities they serve.
The electrification effort aligns with broader national goals to enhance rural infrastructure and opportunities, echoing sentiments that have been highlighted in recent political discourse.
