President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has called on Malawians to dismiss misleading claims from politicians who fail to acknowledge the progress his administration is making in national development. Speaking at a mass rally held at Area 24 Ground in Lilongwe, where newly elected party leadership was unveiled, Chakwera outlined key interventions that his government has implemented to enhance the welfare of citizens.
During his address, the President highlighted improvements in road and railway infrastructure, expanded electricity capacity, the establishment of mega farms, and the Social Cash Transfer program. He also noted the resumption of the Extended Credit Facility by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), increased funding for student loans in higher education, and the provision of upkeep allowances.
“I will continue to speak the truth and acknowledge areas where we face challenges, rather than mislead the public, as some previous leaders have done,” Chakwera emphasized.
He urged Malawi Congress Party (MCP) members and supporters to encourage voter registration across the country, ensuring the MCP’s continued leadership beyond the 2025 general elections, with the goal of extending his service to 2030.
Chakwera also expressed gratitude to Malawians for standing by him during attempts by opposition parties to politicize the passing of former Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima.
Addressing the nation’s youth, the President reaffirmed his commitment to securing employment opportunities abroad and providing soft loans to improve their economic prospects.
MCP Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda praised those who, despite losing in the recent party convention, continue to offer unwavering support to the party. He cited former Secretary General Eisenhower Mkaka and Minister of Finance Simplex Chithyola Banda as key figures working diligently to secure victory for the MCP in the 2025 elections.
The rally also saw the MCP welcoming defectors from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), including former Eastern Region Governor Sheikh Imran Ntenje, Dr. Hetherwick Ntaba, and Grezelder Jeffrey.
This was President Chakwera’s first public rally following the MCP convention held last month.
