The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) faced another significant blow as several high-ranking officials joined the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP). During a mass rally held at Area 24 Ground in Lilongwe on Sunday, President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera welcomed former DPP Secretary General Grizelder Jeffrey, former Eastern Region Governor Sheikh Imran Ntenje, and Dr. Hetherwick Ntaba, the personal doctor to DPP President.
The MCP also embraced former Citizen for Transformation (CFT) Secretary General Chimwemwe Kaunde. Additionally, renowned musician Skeffa Chimoto announced his entry into active politics under the MCP banner.
In his remarks, Ntenje said it was Chakwera’s servant leadership that inspired him to leave the opposition DPP to better serve the people. He highlighted the President’s role in securing a key agreement for the Mangochi-Makanjira road, which is expected to boost the economy in Malawi’s eastern region.
Dr. Hetherwick Ntaba likened himself to the biblical prodigal son, stating that he had returned to his “father” after realizing he was not content in his previous position.
Grizelder Jeffrey shared a metaphor, describing her return to the MCP as that of a married woman who has come back home with her children and grandchildren.
Sources within the MCP revealed that more top officials from the DPP, UTM, AFORD, and UDF are expected to defect to the ruling party in the near future.
