President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has arrived in New York City, USA, to attend the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He was welcomed upon his arrival by Malawi’s Ambassador to the USA, Esmie Chombo, and the country’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Lieutenant General Clement Namangale (Rtd).
During his stay in New York, President Chakwera will participate in key high-level events, including the Summit of the Future and a meeting on the Miombo Forest Declaration. Additionally, he will engage in discussions on antimicrobial resistance and deliver a national address during the general debate, aimed at mobilizing international support for Malawi’s developmental priorities.
The President’s agenda also includes bilateral meetings with other heads of state, leaders of international organizations, and investors to strengthen Malawi’s diplomatic relations and advance economic partnerships. His focus will be on implementing Malawi’s Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining (ATM) strategy and achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
Furthermore, Dr. Chakwera will host the Malawi Partners Conference 2024, which aims to attract investors and discuss long-term solutions for food security in Malawi.
The annual UNGA sessions have proven beneficial to Malawi. Last year, President Chakwera signed the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact II with the U.S. Government, a significant milestone in the country’s development cooperation.
The 79th UNGA session, which brings together global leaders to address pressing global challenges, is being held under the theme: “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations.”
