In a landmark achievement for Malawi’s education sector, the Higher Education Students Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB) has approved a record 28,883 students for academic loans for the 2024/2025 academic year. This unprecedented number of approvals represents a 99.9% success rate for applicants, signaling a significant expansion of access to higher education across the country.
Henry Chingaipe, Chairperson of the Loans and Grants Disbursement Committee at the Loans Board, revealed the impressive statistics during a media briefing. He noted that the approval rate marks a 10% increase from the previous year’s figures, a positive development for aspiring students seeking financial support to pursue their studies.
“We are optimistic about this increased approval rate, which reflects our commitment to ensuring that more students can achieve their academic goals,” Chingaipe stated.
For the 2024/2025 academic year, HESLGB has allocated K29 billion in funding. Of this, K24 billion is sourced directly from the government’s national budget, while an additional K4 billion is expected to be secured during the mid-year budget review in Parliament.
The remaining funds will be mobilized from international sources, including the World Bank-funded Skills for a Vibrant Economy (SAVE) project, further reinforcing the board’s financial capacity.
This development underscores the government’s focus on making tertiary education more accessible to all Malawians, recognizing its pivotal role in driving economic growth, poverty reduction, and social development. The expanded access to student loans is expected to have far-reaching positive effects on Malawi’s education system, economy, and the future prospects of its youth.
