The Roads Authority (RA) has announced that the African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved Jiangxi Geo Construction Group, a Chinese-based construction company, to undertake the construction of the 55-kilometer Nsipe-Liwonde road.
The development was confirmed by RA spokesperson, Portia Kajanga, during a sensitization meeting held on Monday with local communities along the proposed road stretch. Speaking in Ntcheu, Kajanga detailed that the road project is set to be co-financed by the Malawi government, AfDB, and the European Union (EU).
Kajanga added that the construction works are expected to begin in November 2024 and will be completed within 18 months.
“Once the project commences, it is anticipated to greatly enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth in the area,” she said.
Among the key features of the Nsipe-Liwonde road are a roundabout at Chingeni, three bridges, a new market at Chiyendausiku in Balaka, and an overpass at Balaka market. These upgrades are aimed at improving the overall infrastructure and safety of the road network in the region.
In related news, Ntcheu District Council’s acting lands officer, Daniel Tsonga, confirmed that the government has already compensated people affected by the project.
“The compensation process was crucial in ensuring that the project progresses smoothly, and we are pleased to report that all affected parties in Ntcheu district have been compensated,” Tsonga stated.
The road project is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Nsipe and Liwonde, providing better access for trade, agriculture, and tourism, key sectors in Malawi’s economy.
