United Democratic Front (UDF) President Atupele Muluzi has cautioned that opposition-led protests against the use of Smartmatic voting machines could undermine voter registration efforts ahead of Malawi’s General Elections in September 2025.
In a widely shared audio clip circulating on social media, Muluzi expressed concern that the opposition’s allegations about the potential misuse of Smartmatic technology to manipulate election results could deter citizens from participating in the electoral process. He warned that such actions might fuel voter registration apathy, jeopardizing the democratic process.
“Instead of sowing doubt about the voting system, opposition leaders should focus on mobilizing Malawians to register as voters,” Muluzi stated.
He emphasized the importance of collective efforts to encourage voter engagement, highlighting the critical role of registration in ensuring an inclusive and credible election.
The opposition protests center on claims that the Smartmatic voting machines, set to be deployed in the 2025 elections, could be used by the government to rig results. These allegations have sparked widespread debate and raised concerns among various stakeholders about public trust in the electoral process.
Muluzi underscored that perpetuating fears about electoral fraud without evidence could have long-term consequences for Malawi’s democracy.
“Creating distrust in the system risks disengagement from the very people we need to empower through the ballot box,” he said.
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has defended its choice of Smartmatic, citing its global reputation and expertise in managing secure and transparent electoral processes. However, opposition parties have demanded greater transparency and assurances about the integrity of the technology.
As the countdown to the 2025 elections continues, Muluzi’s remarks highlight the delicate balance between addressing legitimate concerns about electoral integrity and maintaining public confidence in the democratic process. Observers are now calling for constructive dialogue among political stakeholders to prevent voter apathy and safeguard Malawi’s electoral system.
